As of May 2021, Freespirit Recreation currently offers two different style of hard shell tents, both are wildly popular but we often get questions about what the difference is between the two. Below we've laid out the main differences between two of our most asked about roof top tents.
Let's start with dimensions:
The Odyssey comes in the 49” and 55” size. The Evolution comes in 55” and soon will also come in 49” (coming summer 2021). That means both tents have a similar sleeping capacity of 2-3 people. Both have a 83” length and can fit a mid size SUV all the way two a full size truck. So what is the key difference in dimension? The Odyssey folds down to just 7 inches and the Evolution folds down to 9 inches. The Odyssey is one of the thinnest roof top tents on the market but the Evolution is still pretty thin as well.
Two Gas Struts vs Four Gas Struts:
The Odyssey comes with two gas struts in the front to help the top pop up to around a 75 degree angle during set up, making it a quick set-up and gets you camping faster.
The Evolution comes with gas struts in the front and the back allowing the top of the tent to pop vertically or straight up. It practically sets itself up in seconds. So even though it has that extra couple of inches when folded, the Evolution is unlike any tent on the market with set up only taking seconds. Since the top of the Evolution pops straight up, it allows for amazing 360 degree views!
The Folding Style

We mounted our Evolution 55" on top of our Black Series Sergeant adventure trailer and love the combination and versatility of the setup. We took it to Alaska and put it to the test. Excellent RTT in all aspects!

Just wondering if the evolution with have some sort of annex coming out for it at all?
