The Ultimate Rooftop Tent Buyers Guide

This is a photo of a Toyota Tacoma with an Evo V2 rooftop tent and 4Runner with Aspen V2 rooftop tent at sunset in the desert

Whether you’re brand new to rooftop tents, ready to upgrade your current rooftop tent setup, or deep into the overlanding lifestyle, this guide is for you.

In our Ultimate Rooftop Tent Buyers Guide, we break down everything you need to know before making your next rooftop tent purchase. We cover choosing the right rack system for your vehicle, understanding fitment, and how to select the best rooftop tent for your vehicle and camping style.

Let’s kick things off with the first step: racks.

Racks

Let’s start with the basics: before you can mount a rooftop tent, you’ll need the right rack system for your vehicle. There are a few different types of racks to consider, and choosing the right one depends on your vehicle, setup goals, and how you plan to use your tent. In this guide, we’ll break down the three main types:

    • Platform racks
    • Crossbar systems
    • Truck bed racks (below cab height & above cab height)

This is an image of a Toyota Sequoia with a platform rack and rooftop tent, Toyota Tacoma with a below cab rack and rooftop tent, and a Toyota Tacoma with an above cab rack and rooftop tent

Platform Racks

First up: platform racks. These are one of the most popular choices for rooftop tent setups, especially if you're looking for a clean, low-profile look on your vehicle with plenty of functionality.

At FSR, we often work with racks from brands like Sherpa, Rhino-Rack, Prinsu, and the newly released KC Platform One roof rack that are known for their high-quality, overland-ready systems. Whichever brand you choose, platform racks are a top choice for stable rooftop tent mounting and easy customization.

Why Choose a Platform Rack?

Platform racks offer a lot of versatility. They’re ideal if you want to accessorize your setup with LED lights, Maxtrax, shovel mounts, or other gear. Because the weight of your rooftop tent is spread across multiple support bars, they provide a solid, stable foundation with no teetering or flex.

And let’s be honest, they look good. A platform rack gives your vehicle a sleek, dialed-in appearance that also offers a dependable, long-lasting solution for mounting your rooftop tent.

Things to Consider

While platform racks are durable and highly functional, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

    • Mounting or removing your rooftop tent can take a bit more effort compared to simpler rack systems.
    • They tend to sit at a higher price point than crossbar setups.
    • Installation can vary depending on your vehicle and the rack brand you choose.

That said, if you’re serious about overlanding or want a stable base that can handle extra gear, a platform rack is well worth the investment.

Accessory Mounting on Platform Racks

Let’s touch on mounting accessories and hardware when it comes to installing your rooftop tent on a platform rack.

Most rack manufacturers now offer rooftop tent-specific brackets, including quick-release mounts and riser feet designed to make installation easier. At Freespirit Recreation, we provide a universal U-clamp system with our rooftop tents, which is a standard solution across the industry.

When mounting a rooftop tent to a platform rack using U-clamps, we typically flip the tent upside down and remove two crossbars from the platform to make room for a low-profile install.

This method gives you the lowest-profile mount possible using U-clamps, but it’s worth noting: it’s more of a semi-permanent solution. If you plan to frequently remove your rooftop tent, this setup might not be ideal.

In that case, we recommend using tent feet or riser feet from your rack manufacturer. These accessories are designed to simplify mounting and make it easier to take your tent on and off.

Ultimately, a lot of it comes down to personal preference and how often you plan to make changes to your setup. If you're having your tent installed with us, we always recommend bringing any mounting accessories from your rack manufacturer, they’ll help streamline the install process and get you on the road faster.

Crossbars

Next up: crossbar systems. This is one of the most common setups you’ll see on stock vehicles especially on smaller SUVs and crossover models. If your vehicle has raised side rails, crossbars are a simple and affordable way to get started with rooftop tent camping.

While platform racks offer more customization, crossbars are perfect for weekend campers, first-time buyers, or anyone who wants to keep things lightweight and budget-friendly.

Why Choose a Crossbar System?

Crossbars are a solid choice if you're looking for an easy-to-install, easy-to-remove setup. Most of our rooftop tents are on the lighter side, so a two-bar crossbar system is more than sufficient.

Installation is straightforward using our universal U-brackets, and brands like Rhino-Rack, Thule, and Yakima offer plenty of crossbar options with either rubber strap or fixed-foot mounting styles.

Other benefits of crossbars:

    • More affordable than platform racks
    • Simplified mounting process
    • Great for lighter tents and smaller vehicles
    • Easier access to bolts and U-clamps during installation and removal

It’s a great entry point into rooftop tent camping without a major investment and it makes popping your tent on and off a breeze.

Things to Consider

While crossbar systems offer a ton of convenience, they do come with a few limitations:

    • Less accessory space than platform racks
    • Not ideal for overlanders who want to mount extra gear (lights, traction boards, etc.)
    • Compatibility issues on some narrower rooflines

For vehicles with narrower roofs like Subarus, RAV4s, and compact crossovers, we’ve thought through the details to help make mounting easier. Sometimes, the feet of the crossbars can interfere with tent installation due to limited space around the mounting plates.

To help with that, all of our rooftop tents include a second set of mounting holes. This allows you to move the tent rails to an inside position, giving you more clearance to secure your U-clamps. It's a small detail, but it can make a big difference in the overall install.

Want to see how that works? Check out our video walkthrough on YouTube for a full demo on repositioning tent rails for narrow rooflines.

Truck Bed Racks

When it comes to overlanding setups, few configurations are as recognizable or as versatile as a rooftop tent mounted over a truck bed. Toyota Tacoma comes to mind as one of the most popular rigs, but it can be done with a Gladiator, Raptor, Tundra, or any other adventure-ready truck. A truck bed rack opens up a world of possibilities for how you camp, store gear, and accessorize your setup.

From daily drivers to dedicated trail rigs, truck bed racks have become a staple in the overlanding community thanks to their rugged design and modular setup. But like any system, there are pros and cons to weigh especially when it comes to rack height.

Below Cab Height Racks

Let’s start by looking at below cab height racks, which offer a low-profile and cost-effective way to mount your rooftop tent.

Why Choose a Below Cab Height Rack?

Below cab height racks are a budget-friendly entry point into rooftop tent camping for truck owners. Here’s why they’re so appealing.

    • Cost effective: This is hands-down the most economical way to mount a rooftop tent on a truck. You’ll spend less on the rack itself and still have a capable setup to get you outside.
    • Garage friendly: If you live in the city or park in garages regularly, keeping your setup below cab height means you won’t have to worry about clearance issues.
    • Eye level access: For many people (especially if you’re taller), a tent mounted at this height sits right at eye level. That makes it easier to install, fold out, access your ladder, or work on your cover without needing to climb up on your vehicle.
    • Ideal for technical off-roading: For serious off-roaders navigating tight trails and rocky terrain, a lower rack keeps your center of gravity down and your profile streamlined.

Things to Consider with Below Cab Height Racks

While the low budget and low profile has its perks, there are some important limitations to take into consideration before going this route.

    • Rear visibility: With your tent sitting below the cab, your rear window will likely be completely blocked eliminating visibility through your rearview mirror. This isn’t a dealbreaker for everyone, but it’s worth considering.
    • Limited truck bed access: Depending on the rack height and brand (like Billy Bars paired with tonneau covers), access to gear in your bed can get awkward or restrictive especially when reaching underneath the tent.
    • Fewer accessory mounting options: Below cab height racks don’t leave much room for accessories like recovery gear, lighting, or large awnings. Some companies are starting to offer Molle panels, but the real estate is limited.
    • Reduces truck utility: If you rely on your truck bed for hauling gear, coolers, or using a drawer system like DECKED, the available space becomes tight.
    • Awkward awning mounting height: Depending on your height, mounting an awning on a below cab height rack might not give you an ideal clearance especially for shower awnings or full-coverage 180 or 270 Awnings
    • Tent limitations: With a five-foot truck bed, your tent options become more limited. At Freespirit, we typically recommend Kali, or Nova for this kind of setup. But if a fold-out tent isn't what you're looking for, consider going with an above cab height rack.
    • Long-term viability: While below cab height racks are a great starting point, they may not support your evolving needs. If you plan to upgrade to a larger tent or add accessories like a 270 awning down the road, this setup could hold you back. It’s a classic case of buy once vs. buy twice.

Above Cab Height Racks

If you're looking for more flexibility with tent options, better gear access, and a fully usable truck bed, an above cab height rack might be your ideal setup.

Why Choose an Above Cab Height Rack?

Above cab height racks raise your rooftop tent above the roofline of your vehicle, unlocking a range of functional benefits.

    • Rear visibility: Because the tent sits above your cab, your rear window remains clear.
    • Full bed access: You can use your truck bed the way it was meant to be used hauling gear, coolers, and larger items without interference. This setup also pairs perfectly with drawer systems like DECKED for added organization.
    • More tent options: One of the biggest advantages of going above cab height is that it opens you up to our entire lineup of rooftop tents. Fold-outs, hard shells, and XL sizes all fit comfortably.
    • Accessory compatibility: You’ll have the room and clearance needed to mount 180 and 270 awnings, shower awnings, Molle panels, recovery gear, and more at a height that makes them functional.
    • Long-term versatility: If you want a "buy once" setup that can grow with your needs, above cab height gives you the freedom to customize your vehicle over time without having to start from scratch.
    • Better views: Getting your tent up higher not only feels more secure, but it also gives you a better vantage point when you're waking up to those scenic mountain or desert views.

Things to Consider with Above Cab Height Racks

While there are plenty of advantages, there are a few trade-offs to keep in mind.

    • Higher cost: These racks typically come at a premium, especially when paired with accessories. That added flexibility and functionality does drive the price up, but it’s well worth the investment.
    • Garage clearance: With your tent riding high, you may have trouble fitting into standard garage doors (typically 7 feet tall). An 8-foot garage or taller will usually be fine, but it’s something to consider if you don't want your vehicle always parked in your driveway.
    • Parking limitations: Pulling into commercial parking garages in the city can become difficult with a taller vehicle profile, so this setup may not be ideal for daily commuting.

Despite a few limitations, above cab height racks offer unmatched functionality for overlanders and more casual campers. Brands like Leitner Designs, Küat, Yakima, and Xtrusion Overland all offer high-quality rack options to build out your perfect adventure vehicle.

Fit & Function

Now that we’ve covered rack systems, it’s time to talk about the fun part: choosing the right tent for your vehicle.

At Freespirit Recreation, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every camper and every vehicle has unique needs. That’s why we talk a lot about fit and function. Two key factors that go hand in hand when selecting your rooftop tent.

Whether you're driving a full-size family SUV, the ultimate off-road rig, or a daily driver with weekend warrior potential, understanding how fit and function apply to your setup can help you make the best decision.

What Do We Mean by Fit and Function?

    • Fit is all about how the tent looks and aligns with your vehicle. No overhang, balanced proportions, and a clean aesthetic.
    • Function is about how you’ll actually use the tent. How much interior space you need, how often you camp, how many people are sleeping inside, and what gear you're bringing.

Sometimes, the ideal tent from a fit standpoint isn’t the right match for your camping needs. And that’s okay! Many customers prioritize function first, even if it means a little overhang or a taller profile.

Let’s walk through a few examples to break it down.

Real-World Setups: Vehicle + Tent Combos

Full-Size Family SUV

Vehicles we're taking about for the ultimate family rig would be Toyota Sequoia or Land Cruiser, Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban, Ford Expedition. For a vehicle of this size, our larger rooftop tents fit beautifully. The Nova King, Kali KingEvo V2 XL, Odyssey V2 XL, Aspen V2 XL, and Aspen Lite XL all work exceptionally well. If you’re traveling with a family or just prefer more sleeping space (or personal space), an XL or King-size tent is a great match for full-size SUVs.

Want to carry extra gear like storage boxes or traction boards on the roof? You could opt for a smaller tent like Nova or Kali or any standard-size model to free up rack space.

This is an image of an Odyssey V2 XL mounted on a Toyota Land Cruiser

Compact Off-Roader

We're talking about your Toyota FJ Cruisers, Land Rover Defenders, and Nissan Xterras. Technically, a standard-size tent would be the best visual fit. But if you're like one of our team members who travels with a partner and a dog, a rooftop tent like the Evo V2 XL makes more sense functionally, even if it slightly overhangs on their FJ.

This is a great example of choosing function over fit to get the interior space needed for longer trips.

Weekend Warrior Builds

In this example, we're talking about crossovers and small SUVs like Subaru Outback, Toyota RAV4, and Mini Countryman. We've got a simple crossbar system and an Aspen Lite Standard, perfect for a first-time camper or weekend warrior. But don’t be afraid to run an XL or wider tent, even on narrower rooflines. A little overhang won’t hurt performance and can actually improve comfort. If you're prioritizing sleep quality, go bigger.

This is a photo of a Subaru Outback with crossbars and an Odyssey rooftop tent mounted to it with crossbars and storage

Truck Bed, Below and Above Cab Height

With a five-foot bed and a below cab height rack on something like a Toyota Tacoma, you're limited to smaller tents like the Aspen Lite, Kali, or Nova. These fit well, and keep your setup compact and garage-friendly.

Switching to an above cab height rack opens up the entire Freespirit lineup. If you’ve got the clearance, we typically recommend XL tents on truck beds. They offer more interior room, better gear storage, and are ideal for couples or anyone who just wants extra space.

If you're a solo traveler or doing something like an elk hunt, a standard-size tent might be all you need.

This is a photo of Evo V2 XL mounted to an above cab rack on a Toyota Tacoma

6.5' Truck Bed for Maximum Flexibility

The longer bed on, say, a Toyota Tundra or similar-sized truck gives you the most flexibility. You can run either a below-cab or above-cab height rack and fit any of our rooftop tents. This setup is ideal if you want to switch configurations over time or experiment with different gear.

Tent Dimensions & Garage Clearance

When comparing tents like the Evo V2, Odyssey V2, and Aspen Series, keep in mind that the frame size remains consistent across standard models and XL models. The difference is in the internal layout and height.

    • Standard and XL tents share the same footprint within each series.
    • Height does vary. For example, the Aspen Lite is about 7" tall when closed, while the Evo V2 measures around 9.5". That difference can determine whether your setup fits in a garage, especially with above cab height racks.

What Comes First: Fit or Function?

Ultimately, it’s up to you. If your top priority is a sleek, dialed-in look, go for a tent that aligns perfectly with your vehicle’s size. If comfort, sleeping space, and versatility matter more, don’t be afraid to size up.

All Freespirit tents are designed to be universal and adaptable. No matter what vehicle you drive or how you camp, we’re here to help you find a setup that fits and functions the way you need it to.

High Country V2

Options: Mini & King
Best for: Families, pet owners, versatile fitment across vehicle types

High Country V2 Mini

Compact, capable, and incredibly versatile, the High Country V2 Mini is one of the most universal tents in our lineup. With similar width to the King (48.5"), it’s a great fit for smaller vehicles like:

    • Toyota Tacoma (5ft bed)
    • Subaru Outback
    • Porsche (yes, really)

We call it "mini", but it's only mini compared to the High Country V2 King. It packs up deceptively small and doubles its footprint upon folding out with 90" of luxurious sleeping comfort. To strike a balance between insulating and prioritizing the compact, lightweight design, the Mini uses a hybrid Tri-Layer and FSR tech fabric construction. The integrated rainfly shell is removable for when you want to soak in 360° degree views or spend all night staring at the stars.

This is a photo of High Country V2 Mini on a Toyota Tacoma at camp in the desert

High Country V2 King

If you're looking for space, the High Country V2 King has all the room you need to stretch out and then some. It's deceptively small when packed on your rig, but once opened offers up a full king size bed. It's a great fit for:

    • Couples who like their space (or just don’t like to sleep too close)
    • Campers traveling with pets
    • Friends sharing one tent while using a second vehicle for gear or day trips

Despite its large size, it setups up under 2-minutes and comes armed with an integrated weather-proof exterior shell for peace of mind when camping in unexpected conditions. It has all the same features as the Mini, but in a package fit for a king.
